2001 All-Star Game

 

National League 11, American League 14

BROOKLYN, New York (Ticker) -The Gowanus Heights Softball League played its 2001 All-Star Game this past Saturday. Nine out of the ten teams of the league sent at least one representative.

In a nine-inning thriller, the American League outlasted the National League the National League by the score of 14-11.

Even though they seemed undermanned, the National League with 13 players on their squad gave the American League a run for their money. They held  the lead all the way up through seven innings of play. The American Leaguers scored six unanswered runs in the top of the eighth inning to outlast the National League. 

The American League won the game, but the a National League player won the Most Valuable Player Award for the game. Joe Bove of the Dogs of Doom was voted MVP for going 3 for 3 and driving in 4 runs.

Hit Squad was represented by five players, Shortstop- Jose Velez, Outfielders- Hector Reyes and Junior Richardson, Pitcher- Sammy Diaz, and Catcher Eddie Gutierrez who also managed the National League team. 

The Hit Squad Warriors did not disappoint. They went 7 for 15, scoring six runs and driving in six. Led by Junior who went 2 for 3 with  3 Rbi's and also by  Eddie who went 3 for 3. Sammy went 1 for 3, 2 runs scored and 1 Rbi. Hector went 1 for 3, 1 run, 1 Rbi. Gunny went 0 for 2, with 1 run, 1 Rbi,  1 walk 1 Sac fly.

The American League which team consisted of the following teams: Chaos, Bums, Assault, Cobras, and Cyclones, were well represented with over 20 players on their team.

Four teams, Hit Squad, Dogs, Smoke, and Slugs under represented by the National League team. The Crusaders terribly failed to send a team representative to the star-studded event. 

 

 

Play-In Games for 8/18/01

The Play-In Tournament that determine the #8 seed was played this past Saturday. The Cyclones defeated Smoke 20-10 in the #9 plays #10 game. That victory allowed the Cyclones to go on and play the Cobras in a #8 vs. #9 Play-In Game. 

The Cyclones took a 7-0 lead in that game into the bottom of the seventh inning before the Cobras rallied for seven runs to tie the game. The Cobras comeback was completed when they scored the winning run in  the bottom of the 11th inning, capping an 8-7 victory.

The Cobras now move on to face the Defending Champion Hit Squad in the first round of the play-offs.
